What llms.txt does, and what it doesn't
llms.txt is a proposal from September 2024 for a Markdown file at your site's root that lists the pages a language model should read. It is optional. As of October 2026 no major AI engine has said it reads the file, and we have not measured any effect on being named or cited. Our site checks report whether you have one, labelled optional.
What moves AI answers is the same work that moves search: being found for the searches the assistant runs, and being cited by the sources it trusts. Read the full llms.txt guide or run the free AI visibility check.
